South End project to restore historic Hotel Alexandra gains key approval

A project to restore a long-shuttered, historic former South End hotel cleared an important hurdle Thursday as the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) signed off on plans to redesign and significantly expand the decaying building.

Developers Jas Bhogal, Thomas Calus and Nick Colavito have proposed restoring the stone facade of the Hotel Alexandra and building a 12-story, 150-room boutique hotel immediately behind the structure on an adjacent lot in Boston’s South End.

The new owners of the dilapidated Hotel Alexandra and an adjacent parcel, both at the corner of Washington Street and Massachusetts Avenue in the South End-Roxbury borderlands, have filed plans with the city to remake the site as a 150-room boutique hotel, including through a 10-story addition.

A Boston development company apparently has expressed an interest in developing the Hotel Alexandra on Washington Street in the South End, preserving its historic nature and developing it without any additional properties attached.

There’s only one unit left for sale in one of Fort Point’s newest buildings, and there weren’t very many to start. The floor-through penthouse at 10 Farnsworth, a boutique building with only nine units, is listed for $7,500,000.
